We are delighted to announce the launch of the ORCID at Oxford service, which enables Oxford researchers to create an ORCID iD with verified University affiliation. This will help you receive maximum credit for your publications and streamline research processes.
An ORCID is a unique researcher identifier you keep throughout your life, wherever you are. ORCIDs are increasingly used by funders and publishers globally to link researchers with their publications and grants. ORCID at Oxford brings the opportunity for additional automated links with University systems.
From August 2015 the Wellcome Trust will require lead applicants to provide an ORCID identifier when submitting a relevant grant application.

What is ORCID?
ORCID is a global registry of author and researcher identifiers currently being established by an international collaboration of publishers, researchers, research institutions, and funders. The purpose of ORCID is to allow researchers and contributors to academic publications to create for themselves a unique, lifelong ORCID identifier. The adoption of ORCID iDs throughout the research, funding, and publishing life cycle will bring significant benefits – simplifying research workflows, resolving name ambiguity, and ensuring correct attribution of research and other activities. ORCID adoption by authors is rapidly increasing globally as authors realize the benefits of being able to uniquely identify themselves with their publications.
ORCIDs are not like passwords. ORCIDs are intended to be freely available so that other people can use them to find and attribute your publications without confusing you with someone else. They are increasingly used in journal submission systems, on research grant applications, on personal webpages and when listing works in bibliographies or publication systems. Many people choose to add their ORCID to their email signature.
ORCIDs at Oxford
Our new service enables members of the University to link their ORCID with their Oxford account for easier creation and management of publication lists. This has two main advantages: i) your affiliation (Employment) with the University of Oxford that displays on your ORCID account is verified and ii) linking your ORCID will save time and effort when reporting publications, for example to funding bodies, because your ORCID can easily help others identify your publications instead of having to trouble you for details. It means that lists of publications can be better managed for more accurate personal bibliographic profiles, and that the University can work with funders for efficient and accurate reporting for the benefit of all involved in funded research at Oxford.
The University of Oxford is a member of ORCID, and was one of eight universities in a Jisc-ARMA project aimed at getting active researchers across the UK to have an ORCID iD.
